Gannet II
Material:-
Mixed Media and wood. The base is mahogany driftwood
Inspiration
Inspired by HMS Gannet. A wooden hulled ship on a metal frame. The bolted and riveted metal frame with white painted timber give up to the persistent salt water unable to resist the decay of metal staining the cabins within.
This ship is one of only two surviving ships of this construction. A ship on the cusp of major changes in designs. Stream and sail powered, front muzzle loading and beach loading cannon and more. Preserved at Chatham the ship was built in the Royal Dockyard Sheerness in 1878.
Made as if a cross section had been removed from the ship's hull. The planking has hemp rope caulking used to waterproof the joints in ships planking.
